Rob Hummel

This picture was taken in the Spring of 1976; Rob was very proud of the patchworked shirt he was wearing....
September 1975 complete Aircheck 23:28 This is the only air check that survives of one of Rob's shows from his Senior year. If it weren't for Jeff Robertson, he wouldn't even have this one. Jeff recorded this in his dormitory room unbeknownst to Rob. Within this air check, are many great examples of production work by Barry Wightman, Jim Redington, Jim Thurman, and Jeff Robertson.

About 19 minutes into this recording, there’s an interesting bit of Rob teasing Jeff Robertson on the air. This Air Check contains the two highlights listed below.

]John Browning's Request 2:26 An excerpt from the air check above; Rob forgets a request made by his good friend, Principia Alum, and former WTPC Disk Jockey, John Browning.

Dow Appreciation Week 2:45 Another highlight from the same show (actually, it immediately followed the bit above). The mid 70s saw many magazines and newspapers coming up with listings of what were the top ten most livable cities in the U.S.A. Not surprisingly, each publication would came up with different lists. WTPC decided to do a send up of this, having a faux contest of their own. Dow, Illinois is a small village to the North of the Principia College campus.

Fall 1974 Newscast on The Thurman On The Mount 2:33 You'll hear Jim Thurman's mention of the upcoming newscast, followed by Rob.

The Don Rheem Show 5:07An Air Check of Rob covering for Don during the first hour of his show in the Winter of 1976. As with all air checks, the material here often cuts out the center of many promos, public service announcements etc., but whoever recorded this air check, the sampling is a bit rough at best (kind of like Rob's shows...).

Fall 1972 50 Hour Marathon 1:34 In order to raise money for WTPC to broadcast away Football and Basketball games, a 50 hour marathon would be held each year by two disk jockeys that would stay on the air 50 hours straight without stopping. This is the conclusion of the 1972 Marathon that was hosted by Joel Selmier and Rob.

"Retrospection" Spring 1973 7:45 OK... Lets be clear. This air check is only placed here to emphasize the progress Rob & WTPC made over the years. This show, from Rob's freshman year, illustrates Rob trying to sound like the laid back "FM Sound" of the early 70s (and not being very successful at it...). It also illustrates the dramatic change from 1973 to 1974, when the staff realized that to achieve a large audience required the structure of a format to maintain a consistent sound. The level of embarassment Rob feels about this air check is well deserved.

The Last Rob Hummel Show 4:26 Rob put this together a couple of days before his last radio show at Principia College. "It meant a great deal to me at the time; trying to mix the fun I had at WTPC with the poignant, while trying to say goodbye at the same time. Listening to it today, I’m tempted to say, ‘What was I thinking?’ "

Jim Thurman: Rob Hummel Farewell 7:39 This piece was put together by Jim Thurman and played on Jim's last show in the Spring of 1976. It's unabashedly sentimental, but was an incredible piece put together for a friend. A highlight at the end of the recording is Jim's reading off a list of the WTPC staff from the previous four years.

Using WTPC as his training ground, Rob (like many WTPC alumni) went on to work professionally; both before and after graduation. To listen to some of Rob's airchecks from KSLQ, St. Louis, click the KSLQ logo below:
